FUJIFILM GFX 50R Joins the GFX System

Posted on

FUJIFILM Corporation has announced the FUJIFILM GFX 50R, a medium format camera with rangefinder-style handling and a lightweight design that’s perfect for travel and street photographers. The new camera will be available in late November 2018 and will sit alongside the GFX 50S in Fujifilm’s medium format GFX system.

Powerful Performance, Portable Design

At the heart of the GFX 50R is a 51.4 megapixel CMOS sensor measuring 43.8×32.9mm – around 70% larger than that you’ll find in a full frame DSLR. It works hand-in-hand with FUJIFILM’s X-Processor Pro to deliver truly exceptional image quality that will surpass the expectations of most photographers – expect intricate detail, superb color and exquisite gradation. Images can be captured at up to ISO 12,800, with 14 stops of dynamic range, and at a rate of 3fps.

The GFX 50R shares much of its inner workings with its sibling, the GFX 50S, but its rangefinder design is sure to make it a favorite with those who work on location. Not only is it 25mm thinner than the GFX 50S, at 775g it is also 145g lighter, so it is perfect for shooting landscapes, capturing location portraits and working on reportage projects. Numerous weather seals also provide protection from dust, moisture and temperatures down to 14°F.

Versatile Viewing Options

Photographers compose shots through a fixed 3.69-million-dot electronic viewfinder which offers 100% coverage and extremely rich definition. A 3.2 inch 2.36 million dot LCD touchscreen on the rear of the camera can be used to shoot images and video, and navigate the camera’s menu system. Swipe gestures can be used as shortcuts while shooting too. An eye sensor built into the viewfinder switches between EVF and screen as the GFX 50R is raised to the eye and lowered again.

Cameras in the GFX system will feel instantly familiar to photographers who’ve used FUJIFILM X Series equipment, with many features and design principles shared between the two types of camera. Many camera settings are controlled by dials, for an intuitive feel, and much-loved features like Film Simulation modes, Face/Eye detection and adjustable dynamic range are also available on the GFX models. The new GFX 50R also boasts Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for instant, simple wireless connectivity with smart devices.

A Growing System

Seven optics support the FUJIFILM GXF 50R and GFX 50S, including one zoom and one macro lens, covering focal lengths ranging from ultra-wide angle to telephoto. There are further lenses to come, with an update to the GF lens road map confirming three additional optics that will arrive in forthcoming months.

Software compatibility has also been improved with updates to HS-V5 for Windows and the Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO for Adobe Photoshop. Plus, there’s full compatibility with Capture One Pro (FUJIFILM), to provide additional options in commercial and fashion photography applications.

The GFX 50R will be available from late November 2018 at participating GFX system Authorized Dealers.
