FUJIFILM has released a new macro lens for its X Series range of mirrorless cameras – the first such XF optic to deliver 1:1 life-size magnification at its closest focusing distance.
The XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro delivers the same angle of view as a 122mm lens on a 35mm film camera, making it a great choice for nature and wildlife photographers. Its mid-telephoto focal length lets you fill the frame without getting too close (25cm), which will help you to avoid scaring away nervous subjects such as butterflies.
Many macro lenses perform at their best when used close-up, but the XF80mmF2.8 has a clever floating focus optical design that’s designed to deliver high sharpness at all distances. Add in three Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) optical elements, a Super ED element and an Aspherical element and you have a lens that’s not just at home shooting close-up but also portraits, landscapes and many other kinds of subject matter. A fast F2.8 maximum aperture is great for blurring backgrounds, giving you plenty of that beautiful bokeh.
Talking of sharpness, the lens’s built-in Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) corrects not only for the usual angular camera shake but also for lateral up/down and left/right movements, which are pronounced when working close-up at high magnifications. This means you can shoot more of your close-up work handheld, and respond quickly to wildlife that’s on the move.
The XF80mmF2.8 offers compatibility with the FUJIFILM 1.4x teleconverter (XF1.4X TC WR) and 2x teleconverter (XF2X TC WR), making it an even more versatile tool.
As you might expect, build quality is very good too: an all-metal body features weather resistant construction and a silky-smooth Focus Ring that is a pleasure to use. The front element has a fluorine coating, that repels dirt for simple cleaning.
